After a busy summer and with 4 new faces in the team we travelled to Epsom and Ewell for our first game of the season and first competitive 11-a-side game. We lined up with George in goal, a back three of Joe, Luke and Matt. Ollie on the right, Elliot on the left, Áedán and James in the centre and Pat playing behind Federico and Adam. The first half was a tight affair with both teams creating chances but we looked dangerous when we attacked. Pat was unlucky twice when the keeper made great point blank saves. Joe was playing brilliantly as sweeper and Luke and Matt have quickly learned how to play as a back 3. The midfield were working hard with Áedán and James trying to create chances. It was a tight pitch so Ollie and Elliot did not have much space but they worked hard for the team. George was alert when called upon and made some smart saves. We continued to try and pass the ball but Epsom and Ewell were able to stop us creating any clear cut chances. Adam and Federico were playing well up front and looked like they could create a good partnership. At half time the boys were told to keep trying to pass the ball and not take too many touched. Josh was brought on for Ollie with Elliot moving to the right of midfield. The second half was a lively affair with both teams given their all. We continued to push forward in search of a goal but it was Epsom and Ewell who got the goal. A good pass through by the midfielder found the talented striker who made no mistake firing past George. 1v0 Epsom and Ewell Colts C We now became a little bit scrappy and stopped passing the ball. However we did create a couple of chances with James seeing his shot saved by the keeper. Freddie was brought on up front for Adam and Charlie came on for Pat but we still couldn’t find the back of the net. One opportunity saw Josh put in a lovely cross which Federico met at the near post but it went just wide. We were really going for it now and Adam came on for Luke as we went with 3 up front. Ollie came on for Elliot and we created one more chance. A goalmouth scramble saw Freddie hit the post and with legs flying everywhere we couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. The full time whistle went and we had lost 1v0. I was proud of the boys for numerous reasons today. They all worked hard and focused on the game and their football. Yes we lost, but the performance was very encouraging and I hope the boys take the positives from this game. Man of the match went to Joe who was outstanding as sweeper. Unlucky boys. It was a good performance. Keep your heads up! |
